Family Notes:

• Madison apparently died without a will. He owned 1990 acres on Turkey Creek. His estate was appraised at $6526.50. A considerable sum for the time. The daughters wanted their part of the inheritance, and brought suit, causing the sale after the marriage of Anna to A B Green: “The State of South Carolina In Equity. Barnwell District To their Honor the chancellors of the said State. Humbly complaining show unto your Honors … and Plaintiff Francis D. Hallonquist and Eliza A. Hallonquist, his wife that or about the twenty seventh day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty three, Madison Cox, the father of your Plaintive departed this life intestate leaving as his distribute … and next of kin his widow, Anna Cox who hath since intermarried with Augustus B. Wise, Anne Cox, William Cox, Clement Cox and Madison Cox. That the said Madison Cox at the time of his death was seized of a certain tract of land (where he resided), in Barnwell District containing about one thousand nine hundred and ninety acres situate on Turkey Creek and adjoining land of …”.
• A summary of the estate sale lists 12 slaves, 5 mules, 1 horse, 56 hogs, and 24 cows as the “perishable” items. The slaves names and appraised values:
• Joe: male $900.00, John: male $900.00, Bile: male $300.00, Curran: male $800.00, Mary: female $450.00, Matilda: female $175.00, Edy: female $200.00, Maria: female $650.00, Phyllis: female $200.00, Elisa: female $850.00 (child), Patsy: female $1.00 (not a typo).
• The sale of the estate items lists A B Green as a buyer of items 9 times. He bought 1 mule (named “mike”), hogs, cows, goats, and the female slave “Maria”. Probably for Anna, he bought a pine table, a feather bed, a French bedstead, a sideboard, kitchen furniture, 8 pieces of wood ware, a corn “sheller”, and a grinding stone.
• Anna claimed the following articles which did not go into the estate sale: 1 dozen chairs, 2 candlesticks, a map of W L [?], a low post bedstead, odd crockery, odd kitchen furniture, and a writing desk.
• In a 2004 interview Olivette Cox2ii told this researcher that one of her grand aunts had married a “Gliddon”. This eventually was discovered to be Sarah.

Family notes:

• The “portrait” of Sylvanus and Elizabeth, last known to be in the possession of Bryan Bond of Baton Rouge, LA, has some history. The frame has a bubble glass and a metal-like cathedral border. No date is on the frame, but it says “Chicago Portrait Company- frame price $7.90.” It seems to date to the 1920’s. $7.90 was a big price in the 1920’s. Chicago Portrait Company was founded in 1893 and located 509 South Wabash Avenue, Chicago, IL. Photographers would travel around the country, taking photographs of people, and mailing the film to the Chicago Portrait Company. They were in the business of enlarging the photographs, and hiring local “artists” to paint over the picture, making it seem to be a hand-painted portrait. The company would mount the photos in large frames and return them to the customers.

1/1905, There was a struggle between MS and LA over the boundary line between the states. The disputed area was called “The Grand Marsh”, a prime spot for oyster fishing. Madison’s boat and four others were seen dredging in Lake Borgne. A LA patrol boat Captain decided to “round up some oyster pirates”. Only one boat could be captured, it was the North America, built in Biloxi, and captained by Matt Cox, with a crew of 2, Charles Palmer and Andrew Desporte. They were charged with catching LA oysters and moving them out of the state. Captain Cox was fined $150, even though he maintained that he was fishing in neutral waters open to fishermen of both states. It became a big story and led to a Supreme Court decision on the boundry between MS and LA in coastal waters.

Family notes: Madison Cox:
• 1860 census: 9 years old - living with Augustus B Greene (his stepfather), born in 1829 in SC; by children’s births moved to AL about 1858.
• He was raised partly by an “Uncle Willie Ladnier”. Being on an island, they raised cattle and did lots of fishing. There were lots of fruit trees on the island. They played near Fort Gaines, a historic fort used in the Civil War. As soon as males were old enough, they left the island to work on commercial fishing boats. They would shrimp from August 15th until November. Their boats were called Biloxi Trawlers. The first boats were “schooners” that did not have motors. In the spring the boats were put into shipyards to clean barnacles off of the bottoms. In the summers they would take their families out to the islands for picnics and swimming. On the 4th of July there was a big race in which each factory would enter its best Captain. Madison’s son Joseph was in these races almost every year. On shore there was a carnival, with the big event being a bathing beauty contest. Eventually the schooners were converted to motorized boats.
• As they had families, they needed to work in the summers. Mostly they worked in the construction of houses. Madison did the building and finishing, while the sons did all of the masonry and roofing. Eventually they built their own boats. Expansion of the fishing industry brought Yugoslavians and Louisianans to the coast. The French descendents were called “Cajuns”.
• Madison was a tender of the Sand Island light house at the entrance to Mobile Bay. His brother William was also a tender of this light house.
• “Uncle Man” was the source and validation of much information as told to Joseph’s daughter Trula. She wrote it down in a letter dated 2/28/1986. He lived with them before getting married at age 42.
