Family Notes:

• Madison apparently died without a will. He owned 1990 acres on Turkey Creek. His estate was appraised at $6526.50. A considerable sum for the time. The daughters wanted their part of the inheritance, and brought suit, causing the sale after the marriage of Anna to A B Green: “The State of South Carolina In Equity. Barnwell District To their Honor the chancellors of the said State. Humbly complaining show unto your Honors … and Plaintiff Francis D. Hallonquist and Eliza A. Hallonquist, his wife that or about the twenty seventh day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty three, Madison Cox, the father of your Plaintive departed this life intestate leaving as his distribute … and next of kin his widow, Anna Cox who hath since intermarried with Augustus B. Green and his daughters and sons, Eliza A. Cox, your plaintiff who hath since intermarried …, Caroline Cox who hath since intermarried with William H. Wise, Anne Cox, William Cox, Clement Cox and Madison Cox. That the said Madison Cox at the time of his death was seized of a certain tract of land (where he resided), in Barnwell District containing about one thousand nine hundred and ninety acres situate on Turkey Creek and adjoining land of …”.
• A summary of the estate sale lists 12 slaves, 5 mules, 1 horse, 56 hogs, and 24 cows as the “perishable” items. The slaves names and appraised values:
• Joe: male $900.00, John: male $900.00, Bile: male $300.00, Curran: male $800.00, Mary: female $450.00, Matilda: female $175.00, Edy: female $200.00, Maria: female $650.00, Phyllis: female $200.00, Elisa: female $850.00 (child), Patsy: female $1.00 (not a typo).
• The sale of the estate items lists A B Green as a buyer of items 9 times. He bought 1 mule (named “mike”), hogs, cows, goats, and the female slave “Maria”. Probably for Anna, he bought a pine table, a feather bed, a French bedstead, a sideboard, kitchen furniture, 8 pieces of wood ware, a corn “sheller”, and a grinding stone.
• Anna claimed the following articles which did not go into the estate sale: 1 dozen chairs, 2 candlesticks, a map of W L [?], a low post bedstead, odd crockery, odd kitchen furniture, and a writing desk.
• In a 2004 interview Olivette Cox2ii told this researcher that one of her grand aunts had married a “Gliddon”. This eventually was discovered to be Sarah.
