Thomas Cocke

9742. Thomas Cocke

Thomas “of Ipswitch”.

1553, Queen Mary I ascended the throne of England and began to persecute protestants.

Family notes:

·         Samuel Hubbard wrote that he still had “a Testament of my grandfather Cocke’s printed 1549, which he hid in his bedstraw lest it be found and burnt in queen Mary’s days.” [Likely a Tyndale New Testament, which Tyndal wrote in English in 1525 while visiting Martin Luther in Germany. One risked death by burning if caught in possession of the forbidden book. Tyndale was burned at the stake in 1536.]

Child of Thomas and ?:

i. Naomi Cocke (4871), born ~1573 in England.
