11/26/1170, at Court at Bur-le-Roi, Normandy, Hugh heard the King’s angry words “What miserable drones and traitors have I nourished and brought up in my household, who let their lord be treated with such shameful contempt by a low-born cleric?”; which Hugh de Morvill, Richard Brito, Reginald fitz Urse, and William de Tracey, knights, took as a command to punish Archbishop Becket.

9/3/1189, Richard I crowned king of England.

1189, Hugh took the crusader’s cross and gave the whole vill of Sowerby to the Templars as part of his penance. (S) Knights Templar, Longman, 2002, P160.

12/12/1189, Hugh and William de Tracey departed with King Richard on the 3rd Crusade. Richard commandeered ships and ordered them to Dover to move some of his forces to France. The fleet was then to move to Marsailles to meet up with the combined English and French troops.

7/1190, the English and French armies met at Lyons; where they learned that the German Emperor, leading his forces to the crusade, had died in an accident.

1191, King Richard captured the city of Messina, Sicily, after they had refused to let the English ships land.

5/1191, King Richard captured Cyprus, which he would use as a supply base for his forces.

6/5/1191, The crusaders set sail for Acre. [French forces were already besieging the city.]

7/1191, The crusaders captured Acre.Many of the forces, especially the Germans, returned home.

9/5/1191, The crusaders defeated Saladin at the battle of Arsuf.

9/8/1191, The crusaders arrived a Jaffa to find it’s fortifications destroyed.

12/1191, The crusaders arrived at Beit Nuba, 12 miles from Jerusalem; but decided they could not begin a siege.

8/1/1192, The crusaders conducted a sea assault on Jaffa.

9/2/1192, King Richard made a 3-year truce with Saladin.

10/1192, King Richard left the crusade to return home, appointing Henry of Champagne as the leader of the crusaders. [King Richard was captured and imprisoned in Germany on his return voyage.]

1192, Hugh remained in the holy lands under the command of Henry of Champagne.

1193, Hugh returned to England.

1200, Hugh de Morevill paid a fine for the marriage ‘inter filiam suam et Ric de Egremunt’ in Cumberland. (S) FMG. [Hugh’s daughter Ada married Richard de Lucy of Egremund, Cumberland.]

1200, ‘Hug de Morevill et Helew uxor eius’, paid a fine relating to ‘dote ipsi Helewis’ in Westmoreland. (S) FMG.

10/30/1200, King John to William, king of Scots; he sends him Roger, bishop of St Andrews, Saher de Quincy, Hugh de Moreville and Richard de Maleville, by whom, and by these letters patent, he sends a safe conduct to William and his attendants. (S) POMS.

3/1/1201, Hugh de Morevill granted a market and fair at Krik-Oswald, Cumberland. (S) Gazetteer of Markets and Fairs. [This market inherited through his daughter’s 2nd marriage.]

By 1203, Hugh of Burgh by Sands, Lord of Westmorland, died. [There are multiple legends of where the penant knights are buried.]
