1412. Robert Chowning & 1413. Anne Poole


5/4/1659, Robert born in Middlesex Co., VA, s/o 2824. Robert Chowning & 2825. Joanne Hitchcock.
~1665, Ann born in ?. [Likely related to William Poole “in Virginia 1623” of Preston in Andernesse in Lankeshire.]
1674, Robert’s father died when he was 15. (S) The Chesapeake in the 17th Century, Tate, 1980, P167.
1/1697, “Robert Chowning Plt against Richard Shurley deft dismist for want of prosecution.”
Bef. 9/5/1698, Robert died in Middlesex Co. In his will he provided for equal division of possessions “among all my children” [350 acres of land], and jewelry for daughters Elizabeth and Ann.
9/1698, “Upon the motion of the Executors of Robert Chowning deced, it is ordered that John Micham, … doe appraise the estate of Robert Chowning deced, on the last Thrusday in theis moneth … .”
Undated: “Anne Chowning widow of Robt Chowning and mother of 7 ages 15-4 ask friends Richard Allen and Richard Shurley ‘to act and doe’ for the children ‘for their advantage’.”
1699, “Ann Chowning will Exor, Friends Richard Allin and Richard Shurley 2 daughters Eliz Chowning and Ann…wit: Edw Docker, Michael Curtis.”
Bef. 3/1700, Anne died. “Nonsuit is granted to Richard Allin and … executors of Ann Chowing decd against Frances Weekes late sheriffe of Middlesex County with damages according to law and costs.”

Family notes:
• Another Chowning line: 1683 – “Thomas Chowning” witnessed a deed of John Nash. 1686 – “Thomas Chowning” sold land to “Docker” who sold in it 1692 when this Thomas was “dec’d”.

i. Elizabeth Chowning, born ~1683 in Middlesex Co., VA.
[Court records identify Thomas and Elizabeth as “executors”.]

ii. Thomas Chowning ( 706), baptized 7/27/1684 in Middlesex Co., VA.
4/1700, “The petition of Thomas Chowning … surviving executors of Robert Chowning decd … executors of last will and testament of Ann Chowning decd … .”

iii. George Chowning, born 2/16/1686 in Middlesex Co., VA.
1712, George bought land known as “Pine Island.”
6/2/1713, George called to grand jury duty in Middlesex Co.
2/4/1714, “George Chowning & Elizabeth Daniell married Febry ye 4 1714.”
12/6/1715, George called to grand jury duty in Middlesex Co.
1716, George “Chewning” on list of thitheables in St. Mary’s, White Chapel Parish.
12/18/1726, George wrote his will.
1727, George an appraiser of the estate of Thomas Shurley.
