4/1495, John, ‘gentilman of London’, began acquiring land around Belhus, buying Culverhouse. [Added Lawrence and Quintin farms, a farm adjoining Bredal Street, Somers at heth, and the manor of Noke.]

1499, John Barrett of Belhus in Aveley bought the manor of Noke from Robert Andrews. (S) A Hist. of the County of Essex, V7, 1978.

10/26/1500, Proof of age of Thomas Dyneley, son and heir of Edward Dyneley and Sanchea his wife. He is aged 22 and more. (S) CIsPM.

Phyllis Harpsfield, d/o John, 1st married Thomas Dyneley. [1 daughter, Elizabeth.]

1500, John Barrett paid 20 marks for the 'inning' of 21 a. marsh at Noke, with a wall 6 ft. high, 14 ft. wide at the base, and 3½ ft. at the top.

1503, Thomas Dyneley, heir in 1494 to his mother of Wolverton manor, died leaving the manor to Phyllis for life.

1511–17, Phyllis died. [Estate settlement of her daughter Elizabeth.]

John married 3rd Margaret Norris, sister to Sir Henry Norris of Berkshire.

John married 4th, Mary ?, widow of a Mr. Blage [Mary mentioned in John’s will.]

7/1526, John made a jointure to his wife Mary.

1526-27, John ‘Barrett Register of Prerog. Court London Avethely et Essex.’

10/14/1526, ‘John Barrett Esquire Register’ made his will: He referred to “my place called Belhouse Hall, alias Barrett’s which I have newly builded.” [John possessed about 1400 acres of land around Belhus, and another 600 in Sutton, near Rochford.]

Bef. 2/23/1527, John died. (S) Will proved. [His male heir was his eldest grandson Edward, age 5.]

Family notes:

·         John of Belhouse in Aveley, Essex, described by Morant as “applying himself to the study of the law, became eminent in that profession.” His contemporary, John Leland the antiquary, in his Encomia Illust. viror. (Works, 1774 ed., v, p. 107), vaunts his forensic eloquence in latin verse.

Bef. 1517, George married his step-sister Elizabeth Dyneley.

1517, “George Barrett and Elizabeth, his wife, daughter and heir of Thomas Dyneley, esquire. ….: Refusal to convey the manors of Stanford and Wolverton, as devised by the will of the said Thomas.:Berks, Hants.” (S) UKNA.

11/11/1517, George and Elizabeth received livery of Wolverton manor. (S) Letters and Papers … Reign of Henry VIII, P1188. [Elizabeth’s ancestry is given in the document.]

1525, George died.
