1/15/1616-17, General Session held at Wells: “On a complaint from the churchwardens and overseers of Congersbury that John Smythes, gent, of Wrington, hath placed in certain mills in Congersbury a poor old mand and his wife, … desire that he will give security or else remove them. …” (S) Somerset Record Society, 1887, P197.

10/18/1629, Joan’s little brother John, Gentleman of Axbridge, Somerset, bequeathed all of his possessions to her and her children. He was the only male born to their father and was the heir. Both “my brother in lawe John Smithes of Wirington esquire and his wife Joane my sister” were named executors. (S) See John Bickombe.

ii. Elizabeth Smythies (4961), born 6/22/1595 in Wrington.
“Elizabeth Godwyn” named in the will of her father.
“Elizabeth Godwin” named in the will of her mother.

iii. Sarah Smythies, born 1/12/1597 in Wrington.
Bef. 1620, Sarah married Nicholas Harvey. (S) John’s will.

5/26/1609, John, “son and heir of John of Wrington” matriculated at Brasenose College, Oxford.
1611, John a student at the Middle Temple.
12/21/1614, “Memorandum that the xxj th daye December 1614: John Smythes of Wrington in the County of Somerset Gentleman Sonne of John Smythes of Wrington, The afforesaid gentleman havinge married with Sarah Fowens, daughter of the afforenamed John Fowens of the Citye of Bristoll menchant deceased came before Mr Thomas James Maior of the said Cytie of Bristoll and dis acknowledge himself to have received and to be fully satisfied of the summe of one thousand marks of lawfull money of England … bequeath unto the said Sarah by her father John Fowens deceased … the same John Smythes the sonne doth clearly acquitt and discharge the Maior and Commonalty of the said Cytie.”
1623, John age 25.
5/4/1626, John buried in Wrington. [His father’s will refers to him as “lately buried.”]

v. Mary Smythies, baptized 10/21/1599 in Wrington.
Mary married James Bisse. (S) John’s will.
2/2/1639, Mary “proved” her mother’s will.
Bef. 5/15/1640, James died – will probated. (S) UKNA.
1649, “William Ceely v Robert Godwyn, Edward Huish, Alexander Jett and Mary Bisse, widow: Huntspill, Somerset.” (S) UKNA. [Note: Robert Godwin is husband of Mary's sister Elizabeth. Edward Huish is married to Robert's sister Christian.]

vi. Katherine Smythes, baptized 6/16/1602 in Wrington.
Katherine married William Strode. [She is not mentioned in her father’s will, but is mentioned in her mother’s. Her baptismal record at Wrington: “Katherine d. of John Smythes.”]

3/17/1639, Richard, born 1600, was buried in Widworthy.
6/1/1639, Joan renounced administration of Richard’s estate.
8/5/1643, Joan buried at Widworthy.
Children:
John Chichester, baptized 10/11/1626.
He married Margaret Ware, d/o John & Margaret Dart.
6/11/1661, he was buried.

viii. Judith Smythies, born 6/24/1608 in Wrington.
1/1/1622 at Wrington, age 14, Judith married John Tavenor. (S) Parish Register, John’s will.
