1297, Elizabeth living.

8/23/1297, King Edward left England with 500 ships to attack France and assert his rights. Because of the refusal of many barons, Edward only had a small contingent of knights. The army sailed for Flanders to seek additional support.

11/1/1297 in Flanders, Nicholas Pointz one of many knighted by the King. [The others included Philip de Welles, and Philip Paynel.]

7/22/1298, King Edward defeated Sir William Wallace at the battle of Falkirk, Scotland. The Scots defensive position was strong, but based on spearmen with support of some cavalry and archers. Edward’s armored knights were repulsed by the amassed spear points. Edward brought up his Welsh longbowmen. They cut gaps into the Scottish ranks through which the mounted English knights could charge. The Scots were routed, but Wallace escaped. Nicholas Pointz with 5 men in his retinue, 4 of which had previously served with him served in his father retinue.

9/8/1310, Nicholas received letters of protection for service with his tenurial lord Gilbert de Clare, earl of Gloucester.

9/17/1310, Nicholas Pointz found service in Scotland with the Earl of Gloucester. Nicholas a banneret with 2 ‘servientes’ at the muster in the retinue of the Earl.

2/1/1311, Nicholas had papers to go over seas on pilgrimage. (S) CPRs.

5/1311, Nicholas appointed to select foot soliders from Somerset and Dorset to serve in Scotland. [King Edward II was already in the North waging war with Scotland.]
