678. John Coombs & 679. Alice Jolly


1742, Alice, “Elce”, born in Bucks Co., PA; d/o 1358. Samuel Jolly & 1359. Letitia Nelson.

John married Alice in McConnellsburg, Cumberland Co. [now Bedford Co.], PA.

John owned the Shrenker Place, located on Licking Creek.

1773, John, Joseph and Edward Coombs on the Bethel Twp., Bedford Co., PA tax lists.

1775, John, Joseph and Edward Coombs on the Bethel Twp., Bedford Co., PA tax lists.

1/9/1777, John a private in military service in Capt Hendershot’s Co. A, 1st Batt. of Bedford Co., Nelson Jolly, Alice’s brother, was also in the unit.

6/8/1779, John, father of Sarah Coombs, testified to her age in marriage bond with Thomas Fouch.

1784, John Coombs & Nelson Jolly with their families navigated the Rivers to the Fall of the Ohio, settling at the mouth of Beargrass Creek.

John’s brother Edward gave him bond for land in KY. (S) 1809 Deposition of Edward.

By 1778, the family had moved to KY.

4/5/1798, William Herrod signed a marriage bond in Nelson Co., KY for Alcey Combs & Samuel Herrin. Alcey’s father, John Combs, gave his permission for her to marry.

8/12/1800, John wrote his will: Will of John Coombes. To wife Elce “the 80 acres of land whereon I live” with stock & equipment until her death “during her natural life...to [sons] Edward & Nelson on my wife’s death.” Daus. Sarah, Lettice, and Elce to have 10£ each; sons Edward and Nelson “the 100 acres of land whereon he [each] now lives;” sons Asa and Samuel were left $1.00 each “as I have given them share of my estate in land previous to this”, and sons John and Joseph were left “350 acres of land on Short Creek a branch of Rough Creek which I purchased from Andrew Hines and Phillip Phillips.” Execs: sons Edward & Nelson. Wits: John Huston, Samuel Coombs, Adin Coombs.

12/1801, John died in Nelson Co., KY; Alice surviving.

i. Sarah Coombs, born 2/7/1760.
7/15/1779 in Bedford Co., PA, Sarah married Thomas Fouch, ceremony performed by Rev. Joseph Powel, a minister of the Tonoloways Baptist Church.
8/8/1828, Sarah died in Loudoun Co., VA.
Child: William Fouch [in 1838 William continued the family Bible records of this family, including the identification of the parents of his mother. The original records were from a 1791 Bible of the Fouch family.]

iii. Asa Coombs, born 11/26/1770 in PA.

iv. Samuel Coombs, born ~1773 in PA.
10/15/1804, Samuel married Jane Hash in Green Co., KY.

v. Alcy Coombs, born ~1777 in PA.
4/5/1798 in Nelson Co., KY, Alcey married Samuel Herrin.

vi. Joseph Coombs, born 3/13/1778 in Nelson Co., KY.
3/20/1798 in Nelson Co., KY, Joseph married Rachel Herrin.
