1190, Robert, supported by King Richard I of England, became
the Grand Master of the Templar Order of Knights. [Robert, a knight of Anjou
and ally of King Richard I was elected even though he had been a member for a
short time.]
12/12/1189, On departing for the crusade, Robert commanded
King Richard’s fleet of 63 ships.
7/31/1190, The fleet arrived at Marsaille having left
England from Dover. There they expected 30 additional ships of soldiers
arriving over land from Normandy, but the ships had not arrived.
9/22/1190, King Richard’s army
arrived at Sicily.
1191, Richard captured the city of Messina, Sicily, after
they had refused to let the English ships land.
5/1191, 24 ships sank in a storm on the way to Cyprus. [King
Richard would be married on Cyprus.]
6/5/1191, Richard set sail for Acre on the galley
Trenchmere. [The French forces were already besieging the city. Seige engines
were launching objects at walls, troops were trying to fill in the moat, and
other troops were tunneling under the walls; but the various national groups
were acting independently.]
7/1191, Robert on crusade with King Richard, King Philip Augustus,
and his son-in-law at the siege of Acre.
7/12/1191, Acre fell to the combined forces of the English,
French, and Germans.
7/31/1191, Due to the death of Count of Flanders, and
Philip’s own illness, Philip left his 10,000 men under the control of Hugh III,
Duke of Burgundy, and left for France.
9/5/1191, Robert in the crusader army when King Richard led
the defeat of Saladin at the battle of Arsuf.
12/1191, The army arrived at Beit Nuba, 12 miles from
Jerusalem; but returned to Jaffa when they decided they could not sustain a
siege. [Legend says that Robert and a group of Templars entered Jerusalem
attempting to retrieve artifacts. While there they began a long-term conflict
with some assassins.]
1192, King Richard sold the Island of Cyprus to the Templars
for 25,000 silver marks; Robert becoming Lord of Cyprus.
4/1192, Hearing that his forces would not be able to hold
Cyprus, Robert granted Cyprus to Guy de Lusignan, King of Jerusalem, who was
without a kingdom.
8/1/1192, The crusaders conducted a sea assault on Jaffa.
9/9/1192, King Richard turned over command of the crusaders
to Henry of Champagne.
9/28/1193, Robert died in the Holy Land.
