1764, William born in the 96th Dist., SC, s/o 232. Oswald Potts I.
1/18/1768, Elizabeth born Guilford, Newberry Co., SC, d/o 234. Thomas Lamb & 235. Sarah ?.
1780, from Union Dist., SC, William entered as a Private in the SC line during the Revolutionary War. He served 3 tours totaling about 17 months and 10 days. (S) Family notes [See original document on CD.]
1790, (S) 1790 Census, SC, Union Co. William is next to his brother Abner, and near uncles of Elizabeth, John & Longshore Lamb. The young son would be Oswald, the other female is not identified.
(S) 1800 Census, SC, Union Co. William’s 1st four sons are listed, as is one unidentified daughter. His brother Abner is also listed, but they are not listed next to each other.
~1805 William moved to TN where he was a farmer and Methodist minister. (S) Potts Family in America and Great Britian, 1901, Thomas Maxwell Potts.

7/1821, Elizabeth’s father’s will probated in TN – she is named as a daughter.
1830, (S) 1830 Census, TN, Henry Co. His sons Abner, Wesley, and Willie live nearby.
8/1/1830, in Henry Co., TN, William witnessed the will of his granddaughter’s husband, James Stem56.
9/10/1832, William appeared in open court to apply for a pension for Revolutionary War service. He was eventually awarded an initial payment of $57.77, with and annual pension of $173.31. He listed his age as ~66. (S) 1835 Henry Co. TN Pension Roll, and Original Copy from Heritage Quest On-Line.
1840, (S) 1840 Census, TN, Henry Co. Both are 70-80 years old. No children at home.
Bef. 1850 both William and Elizabeth apparently died – not in 1850 census.

Family notes:
• William’s Revolutionary War Pension Application: “Declaration of William Potts under the act of Congress proposed in 1832. State of Tennessee, Henry County.} September session 1832, on this 10th day of September, personally appeared in this open court – before the Justices of said court, the same being a court of record and now in person William Potts a resident of said county age about sixty six years or sixty seven years – who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to entitle him to the benefit of the act of Congress proposed June 1 1832. That he entered the sevice of the United States about the age of sixteen years in the county of Union in the State of South Carolina at or near the close of the war, the year he does not recollect – that he went as a draftsman under Capt. Richard Burgess and Col William Fose and Col Benjamin Roebuck – that he served a three months tour – that he marched from Union County to Orangeburg in South Carolina – where he was stationed until his time of service expired – he returned home – and before a great while was again drafted and served about two months and ten days – under Capt, James Woodson and Col Thomas Brandon during which time (?) were (?) a part of our time guarding (?) Black house. He again entered the service of the United States as a volunteer Capt John Martindale and served about twelve months to the best of his recollection – that he was engaged during said tour principally in tours after the Tories in various parts of the state. That he was in the army at the time peace made – that he knows of no person in this state by whence he can prove services. He has secured the affidavit of one of his old fellow soldiers and a lady of his acquaintance who resides in South Carolina of his services. He stated that his name is not on the pension agency of any State of the Union and he hereby relinquishes all claims to a pension except the present.” William (X) Potts.
• Affidavit of C S Holland: “We state that we are well acquainted with William Potts the pension applicant for a person. That he is understood and believed to have been a soldier of the Revolution and that he is an honest man.”
• Affidavit of Mary Bobo: “South Carolina Union District} Personally appeared before me John Norman one of the Justices of the Quorum of the said district Mary Bobo the wife of Solomon Bobo Senior and being duly sworn Saith on oath that she recollects that her brother William Potts who formerly lived in this state (but at this time said to be living in Tennessee) was gone from home a considerable time in the time of the Revolutionary War and to be gone down the county to serve a tour in the United State Service that Richard Burgess was an officer in the company he went with, and that she recollects that he went other tour. Said to be gone to the Block House. Sworn to a subscribed before me on this 24th day of November, 1831.” Mary (X) Bobo.
